You’re trying or planning to have a baby.
If you and your partner are trying to conceive or planning to get pregnant, a semen analysis is the first step to rule out male fertility issues. It’s never too soon — we recommend proactive semen analysis. Testing sperm early can help you avoid costly and unnecessary tests or treatments down the line, and can help you get more quickly to your goal of starting a family.
You want to improve your fertility.
Sperm takes about 72 days to produce. That means it will take at least 2–3 months for any changes you make to have a measurable impact on your sperm health. We recommend starting with a baseline semen analysis, and then testing every 3 months to see if your healthier lifestyle, surgery, or medication is helping to improve your fertility.
You might want to freeze your sperm.
If you’re freezing your sperm for the future, start with a semen analysis to ensure your sperm is healthy and fertile before freezing. One semen sample will be split into 4 vials. These vials can be sent to multiple labs for risk-free storage.
4 vials = Unlimited IVF/ICSI treatments and up to 4 IUI treatments
If you know you want to freeze multiple semen samples, check out the For Tomorrow or Forever bundles for a better value.
You’ve had a vasectomy or vasectomy reversal.
If you have a vasectomy for long-term birth control, you should get a semen analysis around 12 weeks after the procedure, to confirm there’s no sperm left in your semen.
If you have surgery to reverse a previous vasectomy, we recommend getting a semen analysis every month for 12 months to ensure your sperm quality, count, and motility is recovering.
Semen volume: How much semen you’re producing
Sperm concentration: How many sperm are present in your semen
Sperm motility: How many of your sperm are moving — a crucial indicator of your sperm’s health and fertility
Total motile sperm count: The final calculation of your sperm quantity and quality, which is highly correlated to your chances of creating a pregnancy
Sperm morphology: How many of your sperm are the proper size and shape
Sperm DNA fragmentation: How many of your sperm contain damaged or “fragmented” DNA
Post-thaw analysis: We freeze and thaw a small portion of your sample to assess if it’s a good candidate for cryopreservation (sperm freezing)
Legacy’s at-home sperm analysis looks at all the key metrics of sperm health. Many at-home sperm testing options don’t look at sperm motility or morphology, which are important parameters. We’re the only at-home sperm freezing option that includes a post-thaw analysis.
Our semen analysis is a clinic-grade semen analysis, without the clinic.

What to expect
01
Schedule your kit delivery.
Use the online dashboard to choose your preferred delivery date. If you don’t choose a date, your kit will automatically be delivered as soon as possible.
02
Receive and open your at-home sperm test kit.
The kit will contain a sterile sperm collection cup, a vial of sperm transport liquid, a few gel cool packs, and various packaging materials. Keep everything for the return shipping.
03
Make a plan.
You should abstain from ejaculating for 2–5 days before using the kit, and you should only return your sample between Monday and Thursday.
If you’re not producing your sample right away, put the transport liquid into the refrigerator. Once in the fridge, it can be used up until the expiration date printed on the vial.
04
Register and prepare your kit.
Scan the QR code inside the shipping box with a smartphone camera or visit your dashboard to register your kit.
Ensure your transport liquid is at room temperature before producing your sample.
05
Produce your sample.
Wash your hands and genitals. Produce your sample by ejaculating directly into the sperm collection cup, without using lubricant or saliva. You do not need to fill the cup.
Record your semen volume. Find the semen volume by placing the cup on a flat surface and reading the markings on the side of the cup.
Add the transport liquid to the sample cup and swirl gently to mix. Close the cup.
06
Package and return your kit.
Use the included packaging materials to package your sample in the original shipping box. Return the kit through one of our shipping partners using either at-home pickup or via a participating location.
07
Receive your report.
Your results will be available in your online dashboard within 48 hours of our lab receiving your sample. You can schedule a call with a fertility expert to review your results and receive guidance on next steps.
What key factors do we measure?
Our at-home semen analysis includes all the key metrics of sperm health, just like a fertility clinic or traditional lab.
HOW MUCH SEMEN YOU PRODUCE
Semen plays a crucial role in carrying sperm through the reproductive tract. Producing the right amount means giving sperm the best chance at reaching the egg for fertilization.
TOTAL NUMBER OF SPERM IN YOUR SAMPLE
A healthy sperm count means you’re producing and ejaculating enough sperm. A higher number improves your chances of conception, naturally or via fertility treatments.
THE RATIO BETWEEN SEMEN AND SPERM
Sperm concentration is the number of sperm per milliliter of semen. This number helps us compare your sample to others.
HOW MANY OF YOUR SPERM ARE MOVING
Motility is the percentage of your sperm that are moving properly; in order to fertilize an egg, your sperm must be “swimming.” Many at-home sperm count tests don’t include this essential metric, one of the most important factors in your fertility.
HOW MANY OF YOUR SPERM ARE THE PROPER SIZE AND SHAPE
A sperm’s structure affects its ability to reach and fertilize an egg. Morphology is the percentage of sperm that are normally shaped; abnormalities may indicate poor sperm development or genetic issues. Fun fact: most sperm are abnormally shaped. Morphology as low as 4–14% is totally normal.
HOW MANY OF YOUR SPERM CONTAIN DAMAGED OR “FRAGMENTED” DNA
DNA fragmentation is a measure of sperm’s genetic health. High levels of sperm carrying damaged DNA can contribute to infertility, miscarriage, or poor health outcomes for the future child. Sperm DNA fragmentation analysis can be added on to any standard sperm testing kit.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Legacy’s at-home sperm analysis has been clinically validated. That means that our lab has taken the results of our mail-in sperm testing kit and compared them to the results of a traditional semen analysis, and found no significant difference. There is likely to be a slight decline in sperm motility when using mail-in kits due to the time spent in transit.
If your analysis reveals that your sample isn’t viable for freezing — for example, if no sperm was found in your sample — you have a few options. You can speak to one of our male fertility specialists to understand what may be affecting your fertility, as well as some next steps you may want to take. You also may want to re-test to confirm any abnormal results.
Don’t worry: if your sample is deemed not viable for storage by our lab, we’ll refund you for the storage plan you purchased as well as any unused services, such as additional testing that could not be performed.
